Welcome to Citizens’ heART, the new photo exhibition of Aurélia Gervasoni

Interviewed earlier this year, Aurélia Gervasoni comes back to Purcuapà Magazine as we present her new photo exhibition "Citizens’ heART". 

What Does EU Citizenship Looks Like When Lived? 

That's the question that centers this new project picturing 27 EU citizens in Brussels, one per each Member State. 

The title places citizens at the centre while also evoking the idea of the “heart” of Europe: Belgium, one of the most cosmopolitan countries in the world and the historical centre of European integration. Each participant chose the place in which they wished to be photographed —often their own home— opening a personal space to the artist and allowing a fragment of everyday life to emerge.

These are not conventional portraits. Conceived as contextualised encounters and visual time capsules, the photographs reveal the plurality of conditions hidden behind a shared legal status.

From students completing unpaid internships to officials working within European institutions, Citizens’ heART documents with sensitivity the many ways in which citizenship is experienced in Europe’s heart.

Recently displayed in Lisbon, from 1 to 3 September, in the framework of the ELU-S (European Law Unbound Society) Annual Conference 2026, the project remains open. In the words of Aurélia: "I’m looking to increase the number of participants in the project and also create a special section representing countries that would like to join the EU, such as Ukraine, for example. I’d like to dedicate a section of the project to them. For now, this first exhibition is a first step, but the goal is to take the exhibition to different places and meet even more people to photograph, so that we can include several representatives from each country.".
