Hustelle magazine, opening doors for young creatives in Antwerp

Today at  Purcuapà Magazine, we chat with Eline Vermeiren, founder and maker of Hustelle magazine, an independent magazine from Antwerp focussed on telling the stories of beginning creatives who hustle to make it in the creative scene. "We tell their stories through interviews, photoshoots, and editorials"; do not miss this interview to understand why.

When and why did you launch Hustelle?

I was in my final year at college and started talking more and more with all the young creatives around me. We were all getting ready to start our lives in the creative scene, without having a clue how to do it. We all had the same insecurities, anxieties and doubts, with no one to help us. Even my friends who were already chasing their passion in the real world, away from school, didn’t really have a clue what to do. I wanted to tell these stories and share the knowledge we did have, in a printed, high quality book that comes out twice a year.

One of the problems young creatives face is the lack of visibility.

So I wanted to give them a platform to show their work, tell their story and connect away from social media.

What has been the major achievement of Hustelle till now?

Honestly seeing how much everyone wants to be included and the enthusiasm everyone has about Hustelle. Hearing everyone's different backgrounds, jobs and way of working is amazing. Also every event that we do, many people come join us and make it wonderful. And our book is already being sold in the MOMU-shop and at many other places, which is so cool.

What is your main next challenge?

Issue 3 is coming out the 8th of May, and we will be doing a release party/mini expo. We wanted to give even more creatives the opportunity to show their work. Hopefully a lot of people will join us on 8th and 9th of May.

How would you define your path as an entrepreneur for this project and as a creative?

I would say like anything in life, with ups and downs. At the moment I am doing my Master's degree, doing an internship at Flanders District of Creativity’s magazine, working a student job at De Winkelhaak and running a magazine. It is a lot of work, but I love it because this way I can make Hustelle work.

What opportunities for collaborations do you offer?

For every issue we work with more than ten different creatives to make it all happen. All people in and around Hustelle have very different backgrounds, jobs, passions and disciplines, which makes it so valuable to us. They all get the visuability they miss.

For issue 3 we wanted to work with even more people so we will be doing an exhibition at our release party. For this we curated super cool artists to show heir work for two days straight. And we are open to all suggestions and crazy ideas! We love it when people approach us!

Where can we buy the issues and how can we find you (website, Instagram, TikTok...)?

We are being sold in a lot of cool shops in Antwerp and Ghent, of which: MOMU shop, De Winkelhaak, REantwerp, Tique art books, and Krak design.
